These
two plaques are in memory of husband and wife John and Anne Rowland,
and their eldest son, Thomas John. Anne was clearly much revered in
the parish. A reproduction of the inscriptions is as follows:
This
Tablet
is erected by the Inhabitants of Wootton
in affectionate remembrance
of the unvarying kindness of
Anne
the beloved Wife of John Rowland
of
Holly Bank
Who died Oct 11th 1898
Aged 83 years
In loving memory of
John Rowland
of Hollybank, in this parish
Born November 3rd 1815 died February 13th 1902.
Erected by his surviving children.
Also of Thomas John, eldest son of the above John & Anne Rowland,
who was interred at Steeple Aston, 1871.
An
earlier memorial for another woman, who it seems was also much respected
and loved, but who must have faced sadness and difficulties in her
life, reads thus:
Ann
Sotham "a sincere Christian"
who died Jan. 6th 1771,
and three children who died in their infancy.
Also of Thomas Sotham
who died March 22nd 1790
in the 57th year of his age,
who in affection to his wife in his life
he first erected this Monument.
Additionally,
in the floor of the nave, approaching the chancel there are two plain
diamond-shaped memorials stones, which simply read:
Ann
Sotham
1777
T.S.
1790
