The graves
in St Mary the Virgin's churchyard are well maintained. This plain
sarcophagus has the simple inscription of:
Elizabeth
Widow of
Francis Gregory
Died September 30th 1843
Aged 73
Up
until 1800 many were buried in unmarked graves or in the church itself.
Since then burials have been in the churchyard which has been extended
twice. Beneath the yew tree, a mother's small grave bears a poignant
epitaph:
Weep
not dear children
Lament no more
I am not lost but gone before
Because the Lord he thought it best
To take me to his Place of Rest
