This
figure of Christ, on the wall above the pulpit, was found by Captain
Dashwood, of Ludwell, while on service during the 1914-1918 war. It
lay among the debris of a ruined church near Menancourt, in France,
and was hung in its present position in August 1917 just three days
after Captain Dashwood was killed in action. The French village and
church no longer exist.
The Royal
Arms on the wall of the nave, facing the door, are those of King George
I, and are displayed in accordance with a decree issued in the reign
of Elizabeth I.
The marriage
of Robert Francis Kilvert, the diarist, to Elizabeth Anne Rowland
of Holly Bank, Wootton, is commemorated by a plaque, situated in the
north east corner of the nave next to the tower arch. This was erected
in 1971 by a donation from the Kilvert Society, who also gave to the
church two wrought iron flower stands, one of which stands in the
sanctuary. Its inscription reads thus:
In
this church Robert Francis Kilvert (priest & diarist) was married
to Elizabeth Anne Rowland of Holly Bank, Wootton, on the 20th August
1879.
Little
remains of the original stained glass windows which were replaced
with clear glass in the 1950s.
