This
view of St Mary the Virgin, taken from within the graveyard, clearly
shows the structure of the north aisle, with the clerestory above
the nave.
The early
English piers and arches were probably constructed at the same time
as a narrow north aisle. The aisle was then widened or rebuilt in
the 14th century to the width seen here. The
roof of the aisle dates from around this period, though that of the
nave was replaced in the 18th century.
The clerestory
was added to let light into the nave and some of the glass in the
windows on the north side carry the following etched details:
C.D.
1899
D. Horyness
K.H. 1863
George F. Criven 1738
F. Buggins Oct. 1899
A North
doorway of the Decorated period, blocked up on the outside, still
exists behind the organ.
