A closer
view of St Michael's tower. A band of roll-moulding
on the plinth continues around the west wall, now inside the church.
This is evidence that this wall was once external and the Norman church
did not have an aisle. It wasn't until the 13th century that the church
was remodelled and the south aisle built.
The south
aisle has three unequal bays with double-chamfered arches, a rectangular
pier of masonry to the west and a circular east pier with a moulded
capital.
