Although Stanway was on an ancient trade route, it would have had few visitors. The Benedictine Abbey at Tewkesbury, which owned the manor, would doubtless have paid regular visits to their 'Monasterium at Stanway' and the church, a more modest place in the 10th and 11th centuries, would have served a small, scattered community.
