A side
view of St Nicholas and part of its graveyard. The church is of flint
construction, which is in common with other older buildings in the
village.
The
yew tree in the churchyard is of great interest and a certificate
can be seen in the porch attestifying to its age. If the tree really
is as old as thought, then it would have been a hundred years old
when young Alfred was battling with the invading Danes, and there's
always a possibility it could have supplied the bowmen of Agincourt
with wood for their longbows. The yew tree has housed many generations
of foxes in the earths at its base, and hundreds of lamb and rabbit
bones can still be seen scattered around its huge circumference.
