Tamworth
means enclosure on the Rive Tame. Tame possibly
derives from a Celtic river-name meaning the dark one. Around 781
Tamworth was known as Tamouuorthig, and by 1086 as Tamuuorde.
There
are a number of good routes to travel to Tamworth by road. Southbound
on the M6 from Newcastle-under-Lyme, use exit 12, Cannock, and turn
east on to the A5, through Shenstone, to Tamworth. Alternatively,
northbound on the M6, at Junction 4, turn north on to the M42, and
use the Junction 10 Tamworth exit. However, Tamworth is at the centre
of a number of major motorways and major roads, and the routes suggested
here just two of many options.
