This
photo was taken looking down this avenue of trees back to the village
shop. St Mary the Virgin, the parish church, and the churchyard are
on the left from this vantage point.
Justice
was 'rough' in the 19th century, when it was dispensed by the magistrate
assisted by the village constable, whose account book gives a description
of his arrangement of a marriage between Martha Coggins and Thomas
Monk to enable Martha's baby to brn in wedlock.
Summary
justice for adulterers and other offenders was given in the form of
rough music, where the villagers banged pots and pans to make
a hideous noise at the offender's house, and even threw soot down
the chimney.
