Steeple refers to the church steeple, although steeple can often mean a steep place, which incidentally is also appropriate for parts of Steeple Aston. Aston is a common name, usually meaning eastern farmland or estate. Steeple Aston was known as Estone in 1086, and by 1220 when the steeple affix had been added, as Stipelestun.

To travel by road to Steeple Aston, take the M40 and exit at Junction 10 (one hour and five minutes from London approx, 55 minutes from Birmingham approx). Take the B430 to Middleton Stoney, turn right at the traffic lights there on to the B4030. Carry straight on to Lower Heyford, and turn left at the crossroads. When you reach the traffic lights at the end of the single-lane crossing of the river, turn right to Steeple Aston.
