Penshurst
possibly means wooded hill of a man called Pefen.
In 1072 Penshurst was known as Pensherst.
To
travel by road to Penshurst, use the M25 around London and exit
at Junction 6, turning south on to the A22, and then east on to
the A25 towards Oxted. Just past Oxted turn south on to the B269
which will take you through Four Elms and on to Chiddingstone Causeway.
At Chiddingstone Causeway turn south on to the B2176, which will
take you directly to Penshurst. There are many alternative routes
to Penshurst in this area, depending on which direction you are
travelling from, including a more direct one turning west on to
the B2176 at Bidborough from the A21 which links to Junction 6 on
the M25.
