Penshurst possibly means wooded hill of a man called Pefen. In 1072 Penshurst was known as Pensherst.

To travel by road to Penshurst, use the M25 around London and exit at Junction 6, turning south on to the A22, and then east on to the A25 towards Oxted. Just past Oxted turn south on to the B269 which will take you through Four Elms and on to Chiddingstone Causeway. At Chiddingstone Causeway turn south on to the B2176, which will take you directly to Penshurst. There are many alternative routes to Penshurst in this area, depending on which direction you are travelling from, including a more direct one turning west on to the B2176 at Bidborough from the A21 which links to Junction 6 on the M25.
